When Books Burgers and Brews was discussed over 3 years ago as a potential “What if a book club in a restaurant atmosphere could be a thing,” no one knew then that this idea would be going strong and growing over 33 book discussions later.
Yet, here we are.
In May, Books Burgers and Brews (now averaging attendance in the 40’s per month) completed its third season with a discussion around the book, Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton. An engaging discussion was held around the Cuban setting, the era, and the plot centered around a family that was exiled and years later the granddaughter returns to Cuba with only the stories to go by and her Grandmother’s ashes.
So how does Books Burgers and Brews work?
Simply put, Books Burgers and Brews is an open to the public book club. There is no membership, you can attend the discussions you choose to. While some people come almost every month, others will pop in here and there. Since inception, over 300 different people have attended a BBB event. You RSVP online through the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library website. Attendees can choose to prepay for the buffet, or bypass the food and come for the conversation. A buffet that compliments the book is created each month by the very skilled Head Chef, Jenna from Prairie Bay. Attendees have a chance to eat and get a drink and the Co-Hosts of the event Sheila DeChantal (President of the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library) and Laurel Hall (Librarian at the Brainerd Public Library) create a power point of video and questions for the group to view and discuss. As long as people are wanting to talk, the discussion goes on – usually ending between 7:30 and 8 pm. Books Burgers and Brews takes place every third Monday at 6 pm at Prairie Bay.
So now what?
Books Burgers and Brews has two Summer reads, June will be Born a Crime and July will be Where The Crawdads Sing. In August the Kick off to Season 4 will be at Sherwood Forest lodge where attendees will have a chance to win prizes and vote on the books we will discuss for September through May.
